Q. Do I have to have my backflow tested annually?

A: This is not a simple question to answer. The state code says that backflow devices need to be tested annually. However, an applicability letter says that all non-rpz backflow devices installed after January 23rd 2016 need to be tested annually. When the code change first came out, this was not clearly stated. So it seemed like all testable backflow devices needed to be tested annually. So to find out if your backflow needs to be tested annually, you will have to contact your cities water purveyor (in most cases the city is the purveyor) and they can inform you if your device needs to be tested annually.

Q. Should I have my backflow tested?

A: Yes, it is a good idea to have your backflow device tested annually. The backflow device is connected directly into your home drinking water and if not functioning properly under certain conditions, could let high levels of contamination in.

Q. Do backflow devices really ever fail?

A: Yes, there are many factors that can lead to a backflow device not functioning properly. In our experience, nearly 10% of backflow devices tested do not pass.

Q. Why did the state just now make this a law?

A: The State is looking out for its citizens. A backflow device that is not functioning correctly could end up contaminating the cities potable water system. Most other states already have backflow testing requirements as part of their code. Minnesota added this to there code to bring them up to date with many of the surronding states.
